Out of Area Club Activities

Pennsylvania's Road Warriors were very impressive at the Eastern Nationals (2 firsts) and also the AAU Grand Nationals. Several team members travelled with SMWC to St. Louis. Four RW members finished in second place but no champions.

Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Association Eastern Folkstyle Nationals

Although only a few Maryland wrestlers made it to the second day in Salisbury, the finals of the MAWA Eastern Nationals held April 7th & 8th featured many exciting matches. Local champions included Rudy Reuda, Kevin Gabrielson, Tyrone Neal and Tyran Dungee. Other place finishers included Sean Stone, Fran Jackson, Joseph Sargent, Eric Miller, Brian Long, Bryan Santangelo, Randy Holms, Matt Pandullo and Ryan Herwig.

AAU Grand National Trip

Using two vans, SMWC assembled a group of maryland and Northern Virginia's finest to travel to St. Louis for the AAU Folkstyle Grand National Championships April 13 through 15. Over 1800 wrestlers participated in this major folkstyle event, creating several draws, especially in the cadet and schoolboy weight classes, of over 50 wrestlers. Several Olympic and past US Olympic Team wrestlers were on hand, some of whom entered open division competition. Tremendous matches were recorded by Dave Shultz and by Ken Chirtow. Maryland and Potomac Valley AAU Region wrestlers did well. Placers we know of are listed below:

Ohio Tournament of Champions

The third week of folkstyle wrestling's belt series triathalon of major events was held at the Ohio Fair Grounds in Columbus April 22. This last major tournament of the folkstyle season drew 1600 entries, each of whom placed 1st-3rd in the various qualifying events spread throughout the Mid-West and East. A large number of Maryland and Pennsylvania wrestlers made the trip, although several locals were notabily absent after burning out from the previous two weeks of competition. The event also conflicted with the cadet World Team Trials in Chicago and the NE Reg. in New York.

SMWC Hosts Clinic

NCAA All-American Don Shuler, presented a freestyle and takedown clinic at Southern Maryland Wrestling Club's practice on Tuesday, April 11th. He showed his duck under techniques, and also a special ankle-lace he has developed. Don brought along his two sons to work with attendees, and personally wrestled with the "old pro club" in the big guys corner. Coach Gabrielson noted that he used to see Don at many West Coast events years back. "Don is still as tough as he was when he wrestled for Athletes in Action, just slowed down some." Assistant SMWC coaches Steve Arslanian and Eric Lewis who worked out with Don after the clinic didn't think so.

USAW Espoir Nationals

Jason Gabrielson won the USAW Espoir (20 yrs and under) United States Freestyle Championships in Durham, NC, April 1 & 2. Wrestling at 105.5, Jason will now have the opportunity to compete on the US team this summer. Jason Townson also placed.

Potomac Valley All-Star Challenge Cup

The 11th Potomac Valley All-Star Challenge Cup will be held June 10th at Bishop MacNamara High School in Forestville, Maryland. This annual multi-state event features the regions top freestyle competitors in a relaxed round-robin tournament format. From I- 495 take Pennsylvania Ave (MD Rt 4) towards D.C. about 2 miles, turn right on Donnell Drive then left on Marlboro Pike. The school is 1/4 mile on the right. Gym entrance is in the back. MSWA Open FS State Chs, McDonogh School

Maryland freestyle tournaments are getting bigger, 186 entries competed at McDonogh. SMWC winners were Sean Stone, Rudy Reuda, Ryan Forman, Jason Gabrielson, Kevin Gabrielson. Ryan Forman defeated William McKinney in the finals and continues to look great. He also won at Manassas April 22.
