Letter from Coach Gabrielson to all SMWC members

June 23,1996

Hope this letter finds each of you well and ready for the summer ahead. As usual at this time of year, I send all paid SMWC mambers a summary of highlights during the past season and an outlook for the upcomming fall.

We started last September with a small group of about 25 members working out. Our first tournament was at William Penn in early September, with six champions. By the time the high school and junior leagues started, we were up to around 45 regular members at practice, and had been to six tournaments.

We ended our fall practices in November, and started up again at Bishop McNamara in early March. We captured the team title at the age-weight state championships for the fourth straight year with 13 champions plus many place finishers.

Freestyle practice and local competitions this spring have been very successful for our club. We averaged about 40 members at practice all spring. Clinics have featured American University Coach Ken Akerly, Jim Howard, Wade Hughes, and Wade Schalles. Wade Hughes has subsequently become one of our coaches. Our last clinic will be this Thursday, and will feature Olympian Buddy Lee.

Some other items of interest. We had 5 high school state champions in March. We inducted Todd Beckerman into the SMWC Hall-of-Fame in May. Member Jason Gabrielson qualified for and competed at the Final Freestyle Olympic Trails, and member Buddy Lee competed at the Final Greco-Roman Olympic Trials. All active SMWC seniors received college wrestling scholarships. Several left the area.

Our last regular practice for summer will be July 2nd, with maybe one or two special practices thereafter. Many members will be leaving for Grand Nationals or Cadet/Junior Nationals in this time frame. See you all in early September. Call me at 301-855-4565 if you want information on summer events. I know of two mid-summer tournaments now.
