Potomac Valley Takes 3rd in 1998 Junior Olympic Games
To All Final Results
The Potomac Valley wrestling team, made up of the top freestyle wrestlers in the DC Metro Region, finished in an impressive third place position in a field of 30 teams at the XXXII National Junior Olympic Games. Defeating teams from New York, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Greatbridge (VA), Virginia, the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Club, and South Dakota, their only loss came in the semi-finals against eventual winner Middle Atlantic Red 12-0. PV Team members were selected after extensive wrestle-offs between Virginia and Maryland high school age wrestlers. The wrestle-offs were held the week before the JO Games at Gywnn Park HS. Some exciting matches were provided at the wrestle-offs as well as at the games.
In team competition, despite forfeiting 123 lbs due to a no-show from Antuan Lide, Potomac Valley powered everyone including the eventual team runner-up, Mid-Atlantic Blue. Their toughest match, a SF against team champs Mid-Atlantic Red showed the physical results of the week long competition as several wrestlers were suffering from injuries. Many had difficult matches (plus some very unusual ref calls) as they were overpowered and failed to score any wins. The big team match came in the consolation finals against home town favorite Great Bridge. Wrestling was close with several bouts going either way. Ivan Hardnett had his greatest match. Despite having obvious problems, he was able to come off the trainer's injury bench, win his match, then go back on the bench. It all came down to the final match where injured Matt Pecha bumped from 220 to Heavyweight to wrestle Derek Krawiec of Great Bridge (VA) in an all-or-nothing final. This proved to be Matt's last match as injuries forced him to default all his individual championship matches the next day. However, in an exciting finish, Matt pinned his opponent to earn the team 3rd place title.
In some of the individual All-American matches, Nick Alley looked tremendous as he rocked everyone until loosing a tough 9-6 match to Brooks in the individual Semi-Finals. Chris Knox had some tough losses as well during the dual meet competition, but came back in individual competition loosing to always strong Bobby Ray Stenson of New Jersey in the finals. Seth Cameron, his knee injured again in his quarter-finals match, was able to come back and win in his consolation final. Kevin Gabrielson was unable to compete in his 132 pound final against Poquoson, Virginia's Victor Jackson due to an arm injury he received in his semi-finals match, a second match against Larson of South Dakota. He had tech-falled Larson previously but after the injury was barely able to pull out a win.
Coach Gabrielson, in summarizing the team's performance, commended those who dug deep, ignored the pain, and pulled out victory after victory in this difficult and competitive tournament.
According to Coach Gabrielson, "Without the sacrafice of Kevin (arm and back), Seth (knee), Ivan (internal), Scott (elbow), and Matt (back), all of whom had some form of injury but still went on, we never would have done so well. It proves the old saying that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. I've watched most of these kids for many years and I knew they wouldn't give up".
