Potomac Valley All-Star Challenge Cup

Frederick Douglass HS
Upper Marlboro, MD
June 6, 1998

Always one of the toughest grind them out freestyle tournaments in the Mid-Atlantic region, the 14th annual "Cup" held June 6th was true to form. Drawing all-star state teams from top clubs in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland, this event is a showcase of some of the nation's best high school and under wrestlers. Club wrestlers this year represented Team Renegade, Maverick WC, Delaware First State WC, Golden Ring WC, Southern Maryland WC, and Quantico WC.

In the pre-high school weights, many great matchups were featured. In a tremendous battle at 55 lbs, Maryland's Eastern National and AAU Grand National runner-up Jonathan Ferringer faced Delaware's NE Regional Kid's Champ Conner McDonald. The match was tied at 14-14 going into sudden death, when Jonathan countered a low single with a crotch throw for 2 points.

Another exciting wrestler to watch, one of the nations best 80 lb freestylers, was Rudy Rueda. He dominated his class with big lifts and high amplitude throws, exciting the on-lookers and ensuring his OW preformance.

Nearly equalling Rudy's performance was another of the nation's best young wrestlers, 95 lb. Ryan Kennett. Facing a strong field of 5 other wrestlers, he systematically took each apart, scoring two falls, two tech falls, and a major decision in the process.

In the high school classes, virtually every wrestler was a state high school champ or had placed in their state championships. This is unusual since the Cup is usually held during graduation time and many seniors have other important activities to support. There were 10 state champs or runner ups and 6 cadet or junior All-American's in the competition, resulting in a real battle-royal at some weights.

In a stacked weight class at 115 lbs, Maryland State Champ Nick Alley looked tremendous. His first match was one of the toughest against Pennsylvania's Andrew Donofica. Both wrestlers looked tremendous with Nick using his quick high crotch to capture a 12-6 win. Nick seemed to raise his intensity after this match as he went on to get one fall and 3 tech falls against his remaining opponents.

Another strong showing was by Pennsylvania's Joe O'Brien at 123 lbs. In an exceptionally strong field, Joe finished with 2 falls and two solid decisions.

Justin Giovinco vs Mtume Goodrum

The toughest class, and the best of the best matchup, featured Pennsylvania State Champ Justin Giovinco battling New Jersey State runner-up Mtume Goodrum at 154 lbs. Going into overtime with a 2-2 score, Justin hit a duck under so fast that it was tough to follow. He captured the match, and the OW Award with this 3-2 decision.
