SMWC All-Stars Triumphant
January 12, 1998

Youth wrestling just doesn't get any better. The Gwenn Park HS based Southern Maryland Wrestling Club All-Stars stormed through a large number of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia youth league teams Saturday in Berkeley Springs, WVA, capturing team honors by a twenty-one point margin over host runner-up Berkeley Springs. Waldorf's Westlake finished fifth. The open tournament competition was clearly one sided as the All-Stars took home so many trophies from the individual competitions that they nearly ran out of room to carry them all.

Sunday, January 11, marked the start of the Capital Area Wrestling League's dual meet season. The CAWL is widely considered as among the toughest leagues in the Middle Atlantic Region. Fresh from victory but suffering a little from fatigue from their many matches on Saturday, the All-Stars lived up to their #1 pre-season billings by pounding Chantilly, Damascus, and Bull-Run at a Manassas, VA, quad meet. The score against Bull-Run (98-6) set a record as the highest recorded points for a dual victory in SMWC's 14 year history.

SMWC is currently tied for first in the 16-team CAWL, with their next league matches scheduled January 25th. This week a large contingent of team members travel to Oklahoma to compete in the Tulsa Nationals, one of the nation's oldest and largest youth wrestling events.
