SMWC All-Stars Win Maryland Virginia Beltway States

March 11-12, 2000

The Gwynn Park HS based SMWC All-Stars, fresh from winning the Capitol Area Wrestling Championships March 3-4 in Damascus, captured the most prized title in all of Maryland or Northern Virginia youth wrestling this past weekend, the MD/VA Beltway State Championships at Dundalk CC March 11 - 12. Although always in the hunt, this is the first time in over 15 years that a youth team from Southern Maryland has taken home the title. The last time was when this same club was called Kettering in 1983.

Many youth teams from Northern Virginia and most of Maryland competed during the season with 44 teams qualifying their top wrestlers for the state meet. CAWL teams and Baltimore teams qualify the most wrestlers at each weight due to their league strength and depth. SMWC was able to qualify 19, most of their regular team, by members placing in the top six finishers at the CAWL.

It was depth going in, plus a few outstanding champions, that led to SMWC's 24.5 point victory (200.5) over runner-up and perennial favorite Golden Ring of Dundalk (176), and 3rd place finishers Gaithersberg, Owings Mills, and Mountain Road Wrestling (MRW) all with 141 points. SMWC took the lead by 5.5 points over Golden Ring after the first round and never looked back. Four team members made it into the finals, with Brandywine's Jonathan Farringer taking home the first championship at 55 lbs over Jacob of Mountain Road WC in Pasadena, Maryland. Other SMWC Champions included Eli Black (right receiving his award from asst. coach Bruce Gabrielson), younger brother of Chopticon's Garrett Black, at 105 lbs who defeated Pakacki (Middle River) 8-4, and Virginia 8th grade wrestler Steve Ratley at 122 lbs who defeated Shreck (Manchester) 7-5. Eli will attend Chopticon next fall while Steve will enroll at Archbishop O'Connell. Eli's younger brother Lucas also made it to the finals but lost on a close 5-3 decision.

According to SMWC All-Star Head Coach Rick Jones, "Golden Ring is a tremendous team who always gives up problems. They had a chance to catch us if they could get all pins in the finals and we lost every match. After Jonathan's match it was icing on the cake."

After the tournament ended, about 40 team members, family members, and friends headed to a local resturant for pizza and partying. Although we nearly over-ran the place, everyone really enjoyed the festivities. Only the coaches seemed a little hyper as they had to constantly tone down the team from spitball fights and making a mess of their tables.

The SMWC All-Stars have won or placed at several major team events this year including winning the annual Oxford (PA) Team Championships, one of Pennsylvania's largest youth events.
