Iowa Coach Steve Alford said he hopes the top-ranked Hawkeye wrestlers infused his basketball team with some fighting spirit for tonight's game at Indiana.
Alford said his Hawkeyes lacked mental toughness and played soft Saturday in a 73-61 loss at Penn State. When they returned to Iowa City that night, the No. 1-ranked Iowa wrestling team was about to take on Hofstra.
I asked, "Have you ever been to a wrestling match?" There wasn't one of the them in the locker room that said they'd been to an Iowa Hawkeye wrestling match." Alford said Monday at his news conference.
"I said, 'You know what? I don't care what sport you're talking about ---men, women or what sport----you've got the winningest program in any sport in the country, right here in your own back yard. And I'll tell you what it's predicated on: toughness."
Alford said that even with big victories, Iowa wrestlers aren't satisfied. "That's the kind of passion and toughness that I want our kids to have," he said.
With the entire basketball team in the audience, Iowa wrestling won 34-3.
