Three County Wrestlers Represent Maryland

The seventh annual Potomac Valley Challenge Cup, featuring all-star high school and junior teams from Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, was held Saturday, June 8th, in Vienna, Virginia. Northern High's Ricky Sesso, a member of Southern Maryland Wrestling Club, represented Maryland on the high school team at 154 lbs. Chesapeake Beach brothers Kevin and Jason Gabrielson represented the state at 55 lbs. and 65 lbs. respectively on the junior team.

Plagued by three critical no-show forfeits at 106, 178, and 192 lbs, the high school team lost all three matches. Sesso's big match was a tremendous sudden death overtime loss to Jessie Moyer of Pennsylvania 13-12. He also received a technical fall at the hands of Virginia's national champion Brian Hazard. Although loosing all three team matches, the most valuable high school wrestler award went to National Prep Champion Kahlil Malik of Brandywine who scored three falls against opponents.

In the junior team division, bolstered by seven members of 1990 National Team Champion Southern Maryland Wrestling Club, Maryland dominated the competition. Led by the tourney's most valuable junior wrestler, Jason Gabrielson, Maryland shut out Virginia, and stunned both New Jersey and Pennsylvania's highly touted junior team. Jason, wrestling up a weight class at 70 lbs against both New Jersey and Pennsylvania, scored a fall and two technical falls. Against Virginia, Maryland's junior team scored 11 straight falls or technical falls, a record in cup competition.
